DRILL VS. DRIVER (What’s The Difference?!! Cordless Drill Vs. Impact Driver–COMPARISON)

The cordless drill has been around for a long time now. But the IMPACT DRIVER is still a relatively new tool that many homeowners and DIYers don’t seem to know about. In this video, The Honest Carpenter explains some of the differences between these two tools!

Cordless drills are mostly just spinning machines. They use a chuck and jaw to clamp down on drill bits–the motor then applies constant torque to turn those bits. This makes them very good at boring out holes.

Cordless Drills can also be used for “driving bits”–bits that are designed to turn fasteners.

An impact driver is a similar rotary tool. But, instead of a chuck and jaws, it has a lockable collet that traps hex-shanked driving bits.

Impact drivers are primarily used for driving fasteners. Unlike cordless drills, they’re not that great at drilling (in my opinion). BUT, they’re capable of delivering so much more force than a cordless drill, there’s really no comparison!

Impact drivers can sense resistance. When driving a fastener, the impact driver will spin like a drill until a certain amount of resistance occurs. At that point, they will activate a “super mode.” The motor will begin to detach from the bit, and reattach to the bit dozens of times a second.

This cuts down on bit slippage, saving your arm from having to counteract that force. But, it amplifies the force sent through the tool into the drill bit.

Impact drivers can often drive really large, long drill bits without even pre-drilling (though pre-drilling is still a good idea.)

Cordless Drill Vs. Impact Driver–COMPARISON:

Cordless drills are still my preferred tool for driving fasteners.

But, impact drivers are a tradesperson’s best friend. They make driving and backing out difficult fasteners extremely easy. They also save wear and tear on your arm!

I don’t, however like to use the impact driver for drilling holes (even though they do make custom drill bits for loading into the impact driver).

I also still prefer using a cordless drill for driving smaller fasteners, like decorative screws.

I hope this DRILL VS. DRIVER COMPARISON was helpful!

  1. Also, just having 2 different tools means you’re not swapping bits to drill pilot holes, and it takes longer to run out of battery because there’s 2 of em.

  2. Hello. I would like to know if. There is right tools for screw driver for light duty to heavy duty and impact driver in one tools . Thank you

  3. As a single woman who owns a home, I appreciate your videos for their clarity and usefulness. I enjoy tackling smaller projects on my own to save money, while reserving larger tasks for professionals. Your YouTube channel has been invaluable in addressing my persistent questions and even those I wasn’t aware I had. Thank you for your outstanding content!

  4. Impact driver is super useful to have, but it’s not suitable in all situtations – eg, you can misuse it and overtighten, rounding off threads etc

  5. Hello, I want to my son to be a carpenter. What should I do for him? How can he learn? His age is 17th and he is studying in scotland S6.

  6. 6:33 sign fabricator here. Medium aluminum. I see mosoof your example cutaways show drilling holes for wood. Would you still apply the opinion of "drills are for drilling and drivers are for driving" when it comes to drilling holes in metal?

  7. Impacts are over used and are mostly for people who can’t use a drill. The number one real world use for impacts is removal of metal on metal fasteners. Impacts are noise machines and if you about to hang drywall with an impact you’re an idiot.

  8. I’ve been using these drills for decades without knowing which and why. Now I know. Thanks for the informative video. My suggestion for another video if you haven’t made it is how to judge certain drills for effectiveness. Milwaukee, usually expensive, has sets now at very reasonable prices. How do I tell if the cheaper ones are less efficient than the higher priced ones of the same brand? Same with Dewalt.

  9. Got a Ryobi 18V Hammer drill POS .Stop drilling and the chuck keeps going and unscrews and the drill falls out..Danger of buying online.

  10. I have a concrete wall that my bosch easydrill 18v can’t do the job and I was told to buy an impact driver instead. Now I’m more confused. Do I need a stronger drill or should I also buy an impact driver for the exterior wall that’s heating up my drill bits?

  11. I thought that clicking sound that you call a second mode was the slip gear safety feature? Why does My drill do the exact same thing you say only drivers do?

  12. I’m a widow and my 6 sons have moved on. What’s the best tool I would use for household jobs such as putting up curtains, hang pictures, etc.

  13. I used my drill for everything, and sometimes i would cam out the screw heads. I never knew i needed an impact driver for screws 🤦‍♂️until i saw this video

  14. Drill less power but if you have to buy one over the other impact driver all day. Drill for screwing in screws without stripping because it is weak if you know how to adjust the settings. Drill is obsolete if you know how to squeeze impact driver. No reason for drill at this point. It’s like cassette tapes to the cloud.

  15. All your videos are very very helpful to everyone. Thanks so much. I tell my Apt.complex maintenance crew to watch all your great videos.

  16. It seems that my new impact driver just doesn’t do the intended purpose. It says up to "190Nm" but I just tested to fix two 18mm plywood at 90 degree angle/corner and screw slipping, getting strip, and all the streets in my hand. This is just like a standard drill.
Why did you mention this never happens with an impact driver?

  17. Great video! I kinda had figured it out over the years but was very intrigued by the detail of the "why". My first (and still only) impact driver is a hand-me-down from my brother; game changer for me in my recent deck project.

  18. My harbor freight impact driver died recently. But before it did, I noticed I could easily stop the spindle from spinning with my hands. I assumed it was just very weak. Today, I got a new Milwaukee M12 impact driver and guess what? I could again stop the spindle with my bare hands. So, it must be normal. Seems strange to me.

  19. Hello hope all is well I am trying to remove a self tapping screw that’s very tight screwed into steel. I cannot remove with a screwdriver. What would you recommend a drill or impact?
