Adam Savage's Favorite Screwdriver Design!
After years of having drawers full of all sorts of screwdrivers–and there are so many different kinds–Adam has come to the realization that he has a point of view about his favorite screwdriver design. His favorite screwdriver set ends up being one that he has a personal connection to, and has in his opinion the most beautiful handle of any hand tool he owns. And of course it’s a vintage design he has to hunt for on eBay!

old video, but i got a 4 set of stanley screwdrivers with small flat/phillips
and med flat/phillips,then i got 1 each of another flat/phillips.
Cheap acetate handles stink when they age.
I can relate to that. My grandfather was a Snap-On tool salesman when my dad was a kid. He died before I was born, but i remember getting to use his tools when I was a kid helping my dad, and look forward to inheriting them someday. My dad, uncle, and other grandpa were all mechanics, so it’s cool to use old tools, as i feel a connection to the past.
Just stumbled across two at a garage sale! So solid! A 66-206 and a 66-801.
I go more for JIS Japanese.
you probably know this already but the handle shape you called hexagonal is designed that way cause you can put the box enclosed end of a wrench over it and it fits in a way you can use the wrench to turn it
Grace screwdrivers has the best slotted hollow ground tips. Has soft tips but saves the old 1950’s slotted screws on firearms. Designs to damage the screwdriver tips than the screwe. Lifetime warranty.
Titan brand have the same, if not better handles!
Replace phillips with JIS drivers.
Could someone make a 3D printing file that mimics the shape of this handle?
Have you checked Charlie’s Second Hand Store in Denver?
3-sided handles may be comfortable, but not more than rubberized handles which increase torque strength as well. Let Adam have his collection keepsakes, but check out the Klein Tools rubber grip drivers made in USA, you won’t regret it.
I like the square handles too.
the weha is great, steel is great, but i wish they used a sexier color scheme, basically these older SD’s were the best in color and shape. I don’t get why they have to change. I do understand brighter color means you can find it easier, but i wouldnt lose it.
3:53 TIL gription is a word. Yes my phone doesn’t recognize it but it’s in the dictionary dammit
I find it very interesting how Adam loves a screw driver I’ve always seamed to hate…. I’m assuming it’s because of my line of work dealing with a lot of oil making the handles super slippery
Wera 😍
My brother bought a set of those in the 70s and when he passed on his son inherited them. They were the dark handled ones like you have.
Thought you’d be a Vessel screwdriver fan
@ave
Nice I always knew Adam was a AvE fan
I have been replacing all my Philips head screw drivers with JIS, i work on motorcycles occasionally.
Adam clearly hasn’t tried Hazet screwdrivers with their bulbous handles. They are the best.
Ah, those were the screwdrivers I fell in love with when they were in stores!
Love these. Mine were also handed down thru family but are branded Craftsman. Did not know this marvel of ergonomic design was Stanley Tools. It’s such a perfect design, why did they stop making them?
stanley workmaster, craftsman professional/industrial are by far the best looking and handling in my opinion
Agreed about those screwdrivers. I have ONE and have always been annoyed I can’t buy more.
When you said you were nervous for people to compete against you, in my head I said "the opposite will happen, fans are going to send them" guess what the recommended video was!?
Adam, proto duratek screwdrivers are very similar in shape. They are also made by stanley 🙂
I’ve git a set of mini screwdriver bits with a ratchet handle. Found at lows for like 11 bucks. It’s perfect
I did it! I finally found the screw-end bit holding workmaster at a secondhand tool store!
I know how you feel because that’s how I feel about my Snap-On Screwdrivers. Mine are the hard-handled ones from 90’s that came in different colors. I have the Blue set. Got the matching Pry Bar set, too. Yes, I know I overpaid! LOL! I was an Aircraft Mechanic at the time and they were the best Screwdrivers, IMHO . . .
Try the LTT screwdriver
thanks
I know this video is old, and I’m sure my comments are echoed, but Adam really needs to check out some Swiss, German and Japanese handle designs from the likes of PB Swiss, Wiha, Wera, Felo Ergonic, Vessel and more. It will make most American style acetate handles feel like garbage.
I feel like one also probably needs a set of Pozidriv, Torx, and hex screwdrivers to complete their workshop
Assembled my set of Stanley Workmaster screwdrivers via ebay, so glad I did, love these drivers!
A robbery in San Francisco? No way!
Thanks Adam. I’ve been focusing on collecting German and Japanese tools recently but now I want to focus on vintage tools and you inspired me to start with this. I went on an eBay spree and the first of these just arrived and it is marvelous. So I’m excited for the others to arrive. I can’t help but think how crazy it is that never in your father’s wildest dreams when he bought his Stanley Workmaster, would he have known that many decades later, some stranger from halfway across the world, would end up buying one because of his purchase. And I’ve already passed the story on to my son who will now appreciate why this is in my collection, and maybe someday he will pass it on to his son, and who knows what they may create with their Workmasters, or how long the legacy will be passed down?
My all time favorite screwdriver handle is the very old from 70-80’s snap on tri acetate handle and very hard to find only shows up every once and awhile
But there is something to be said about true vintage screwdriver and the feel from actual use over something new imo
You only 3 sizes of screwdriver until a car manufacturer decides to be different. For me it’s the need for a stubby #3 Phillips to remove the splash shield on my Honda Civic for oil changes.
I’ve got a 6 in One Stanley Screwdriver which is 40 years old and is still in good condition !!!!
Adam, after seeing your video on the Stanley WorkMaster Pro Screwdrivers, I agree with you that they fit great in the hand and a classic design.. I recently picked up 8 of them (1 of them is a duplicate flat head) on FB marketplace down here in SoCal for a great price.. I’m looking for a few more to fill in the missing screwdrivers in the Philip & Flat sets.
Wow Adam mentioned AvE in his video. Keep your dick in the vice.
My dad was a drunk carpenter, needless to say I grew up in a broken home
matriculated??? What the HELL??? these guys with there 5 celabile words…
I have never had or even seen the Stanley screwdrivers, but the old USA-made Craftsman Professional black screwdrivers had a very similar handle (although I think they were four sided). I liked those. My modern favorite screwdriver handles are the Wiha Heavy Duty Softfinish.
AVE hasn’t posted much in a few months. He’s been slacking 😅
I prefer Wera and PB swiss over all others
Love the Ave mention
