Linus vs iFixit: LTT Precision Screwdriver, Tested

Linus vs iFixit: LTT Precision Screwdriver, Tested

Is the LTT Precision Screwdriver a clone of the iFixit Precision Bit Driver?

Or does it have something unique to offer? I’ll test both in this video, and compare them to some other precision screwdrivers I own.

NOTE: LMG sent the LTT Precision screwdriver I tested in this video. They did not pay me to make a video, nor did they have any input into the (silly) testing methodologies I used, nor were they able to see any part of this video before it went live on YouTube.

  1. One considerable upside to the LTT driver over the 64-bit Mako kit is that the flexible extension in the Mako kit is *just* long enough that TSA’ll take it if it’s in your carry-on. So all the bits without the extension is a nice option to have.

  2. I came here for a screwdriver review. I didnt expect iā€™d get a 3mins long fidget spinner review šŸ˜‘

  3. I have both precision kits. The ifixit moray is a great set but the plastic driver is garbage. Literal garbage. When ifixit shopped shipping an aluminum driver with their kids and made it a separate purchase, I stopped buying from them. HOWEVER, I do prefer the aluminum ifixit driver because I got it with a kit in their early days. The knuling is better in terms of placement and grip and it is just ever so slightly longer and that is a good thing.

  4. What’s funny about the fidget is that I have a micro driver that had one years ago. It makes it easy to apply a little force downward while getting a smooth turn. šŸ˜‚

  5. Small note, a more polished finish provides more corrosion resistance – do with that what you will. Personally, having actually modeled and replicated parts myself to 3d print things for modification and repair, I don’t at all believe the LTT team actually copied a bloody small screwdriver. The number of times I’ve absolutely nailed part dimensions by just accepting the default given by Fusion360, or choosing a round number, or saying "Yeah, that looks to be about 1/3" is laughable. Those drivers are little more than cylinders with a little bit of a taper, and are designed for an existing common size bit. There’s zero need to create a proprietary standard for something like driver bits, and doing so would just be incredibly expensive with no ROI, and create needless friction for the end user.

Never had one in my hand, but I’d bet the top of the driver is 15mm, and the bottom of the grip just before it necks down for the bit is 10mm. Millions of people every year consistently make the same choices and actions despite completely different circumstances, paths, logic, and goals. People are people, and people have patterns, especially when they have examples to inform them before. Two engineers tasked with designing the same simple thing given certain terms for the same goals, are likely to design substantially similar parts independently. It’d be goofy for one to hear "precision screw driver" and design a T-handle foot long thing, or something shaped like a banana.

  6. Now do this again but do a more serious actually comprehensive review to the more comparable meta grip lifixit kit

  7. Why aren’t you using the "spinner" for exactly what it’s for… Using the driver one-handed and in your palm?!
Notice all of those drivers have it? You didn’t use it once on any of the brands. Fail.

  8. 3 bits in the cap storage is neat, but honestly I think their bit container being a magnetic parts tray is the biggest innovation they’ve got going for this product. I like the idea, and the product is well built and designed, but at the end of the day if you don’t care too much about the in the hand feel and just want a functional kit I don’t see this being a big iFixit competitor but rather just an extension to the existing screw driver product lineup

  9. I was enjoying this video then i realized that you didn’t take this very seriously and watchers would think you did. Fun as satire but misinformation due to being presented as a well thought out comparison

  10. If you want a big set just get an Oria. The advantage is it’s clearly marked and easy to access locations for each bit. $25ish for 122 bits and a few nice accessories.

The ones from the start of the video are great for pocket use on common uses.

  11. Before commenting about the fidget spinner being a _functional_ part of the screwdriver: _yes,_ I know. See my follow-up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rxe8813xODg

All the drivers shown in this video have spinning tops. But none of the other screwdrivers besides the LTT have a ‘fidget spinner’ top (Linus famously markets it as such in some WAN show segments and other appearances on the LTT channel…). Yes, I know the purpose of it is to let you either do one-handed ‘claw style’ screwing, or have more pressure on the tip while spinning the driver. But no, the fidget-spinner-take on the rotating end cap does not move the needle for me.

Apparently my dry humor and joking around with testing the fidget spinner didn’t come across tongue-in-cheek the way I thought it would šŸ˜‰

The LTT Precision Screwdriver is a good screwdriver. The iFixit is good. The Klein’s are good. Even the no-name driver is good! I have no judgement for anyone choosing any of these driversā€”whatever tool works best for you, within your needs and budget, I take no offense if you choose that tool!

I still conclude the LTT Precision Screwdriver doesn’t move the needle enough to justify a purchase, like the LTT Screwdriver did before it.

  12. Am I the only one that anticipates a situation where I’m grateful that I can spin the driver, while holding on to the cap with my fingertips?

  13. I just use 6$ driver with 30bits, 1 flexible tube, 4 prying triangle, 2 prying sticks, 1 suction cup with sim ejector like a key ring.

All in 1 box, it also has a magnetic sheet for screws, but need to keep it outside the box

  14. I have a Klein and an Ifixit, the Ifixit gets way more use then my Klein because of the versatility and the magnetic lid.

  15. A bit disappointed that you did not test the quality on the bits. I have tested multiple types of such screwdriver sets and the things that breaks is always the bits that get damaged. If a screw is tight and you have to use a bit of force to losen it, the small torx bits often breaks if your not careful.

  16. LIDL has a basically the same kit for like 15-20 dollars, and it even has one of those bendy extension adapters inside.

  17. 01:11 the listed LTT "bitdriver" is what I purchased 2 years ago (2022) from Lidl…. Almost identical. I don’t go to say about "higher quality bearing", as I haven’t found anything wrong in Lidl version.

  18. You screwed up. You should have taken the Mako set. It has a metal cap an ball bearings. Only the cheepest two sets from iFixit have this cheap plastic handles.

  19. who needs a fidget spinner on screwdriver ? i dont get it i just want a quality screwdriver having a spinner is just a gimmick and llt 1 sound noisy

  20. For me just buy the best stuff for the price you can afford I live in Sweden so LTT screwdriver is $85 with shipping and tax it will take anything from 2-5 weeks before you get it. The iFixit Mako Driver Kit is on offer at the moment for $24 in local store.

  21. iFixit complaining about Linus’s kit… the Parkside precision scredriver kit is a 100% copy of the iFixit kit and no one cares about it. The only difference is the color sceme and the quality of the bits.

  22. I hated the marxist fist imagry in the ifixit kits, and always wished there was competition for them, because simply due to that I would purchase something else. Very happy LTT has come out with their own.

  23. IFIXIT hands down better then Linus’ crap and cheaper. Cant believe how much Linus charges for his utter shit. Youre the man Jeff

  24. this feels like an episode of intergalactic tv or whatever from rick and morty i zoned out for 9 minutes before i remembered i was watching a guy talk about fidget spinners and screw drivers
