Dremel/Rotary Tool 101: Complete Beginner Guide

In this video, I cover everything a new Dremel user would need to know to get started with using Dremel tools and rotary tools.

This will be a complete beginner guide where I try to cover all of the most important aspects of rotary tools.

Things I cover in the video are safety, basic controls, how to use a rotary tool, what the different bits do, what the different attachments are for and I also include a lot of valuable resources.

This video will also be relevant for users of other rotary tool brands like Milwaukee, Ryobi, Black and Decker, Wen, and so on.

  1. WARNING those cutting wheels will shatter and fling pieces all over and are DANGEROUS as I have come close to becoming injured

  2. What would be a bood dremel tool for beginer wanted to cut out a 5.31” round speaker cut out circle on plastic ammo box or plastic tool box for 2 6.5 150waat marine speaker wil fit on the front side by side ?

  3. I just got a 4000 and read the instructions…i fumbled with just getting the shank into the device, cuz that little metal piece was stuck in the collet. I finally picked it out and now it goes in/out easily. If If found your post earlier, I could have saved a bunch of frustration…thank you!

  4. Very informative. I’ve been looking all over for a good description of the different Dremels. I found it in this presentation. Well done.

  5. @RotaryCrafts thanks for clear explanation! You just gave me more uses for my tools! You opened up a wide range of projects!

  6. Do you think I would be able to use a dremel to file down and polish the thrust pad of an inverted bearing on a turntable? If so how would you do it?

  7. It is easy for me to get underwhelmed with robot talk but the clear, precise and fairly complete dialog, keeps me watching until the end. thanks for this very informative video.

  8. Enjoyed that; I think we are still allowed to enjoy tech stuff.
Those Dremel small diameter collets are interesting. The bore seems poorly centred. Have you noticed? Usually collets are used for greater accuracy over chucks; and with high speeds, so to reduce the spinning peripheral mass. But again: have a look at the small collet. Have been hoping to set up a drill press with an x/y table. Are the tolerances good enough?
    Thanks; and again, enjoyed video.
    Don’t go ‘a-viking’.

  9. SAVE your money and buy a FOREDOM instead . By the time you end up buying 3 to 4 broken dremels youll still have the 1 Foredom (which has more power and torque ) Also DON’T waste your money on dremel bits, instead go buy the Kutzall bits ( better quality and cheaper in the long run )

  10. Thank you so much for your videos, they’ve been a massive help! You deserve way more subs. Best of luck to you ❤

  11. funny how that works. I just broke out my dremel for the first time like two days ago trying to learn more about it, then get this video. Great stuff, subbed.

  12. What would be a good begginer dremel too that i could use to cut out 6.5 150watt marine speaker hole on plastic toolbox/ammo box that small and not expwnsive ?

  13. Will the dremel attachments work with other brands of rotary tools? I just bought the 12v cordless Warrior tool from Harbor Freight. It has the threads like the dremel and it looks identical, but hard to know for sure from pictures and videos online

  14. What would you recommend for drilling and then widening /cutting and grinding holes in plastic (like toy cars, hot wheels etc?). I bought a black and Decker model and got nothing with it, no parts accessories or chart information.

  15. I think Dremel tools were safer than others , because it has the improved engineering design , but because of the high speed, we have to be better cautious .

  16. I’ve watched a lot of how-to videos, and I have to say that this is the most informative, in-depth presentation of logically and concisely organized pertinent information I have ever seen.
I was just trying to find out if a rotary tool could help me fix my glasses, and now I’m wondering how I lived without a rotary tool for all these years.
    Very impressive, dude!
    Subbed, of course!

  17. New to owning a "Dremel" branded tool, purchased the 4300 toolbox one.

Ordering the dremel workstation now, the "220" one thanks for the information.
Its amazing how versatile this tool is

  18. This is the 3rd video I have watched of yours and they are all excellent. I thought I knew a lot about cutting discs and dremmels so I was surprised on how much I learned from watching. The best aspect of these well written and well shot videos is that you chose to concentrate on showing what each of them did using closeup detailed shots and letting them be the stars of your video instead of feeling the need to feature yourself or any other “story line” that many YouTubers do – not that there is anything wrong with that… however…when I want to learn something, I want a video like yours which is why I’m subscribing to your stream over other ones that don’t get to the point soon enough. I wouldn’t even consider fast forwarding through yours for fear of missing out on some good information I didn’t even know I needed. This comment is starting to turn into a review which was not my intention. I just want to say thanks for posting, you’re doing everything right and I will be back to learn more. Cheers

  19. hi can you say that dremel umberla nut and black and decker umberla nut are same? because i wanna use black and decker rt18ka with dremel workstation 220-01 i dont know will both brands fit together , can you help me out….

  20. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I just got my first Dremel, and I’m super excited to start using it, but first, lots of research and tutorials so I know what I’m doing! Saved, liked, and subscribed!

  21. I recently had to begin learning how to use a Dremel (4000ish) to do some very fiddly wood shaping. My recommendation: Fix your work piece using a vise or clamp. Double-sided adhesive tape for small pieces also works. Use both hands to hold the Dremel (even using a flex shaft) and have one hand rest on a solid support with the other hand moving the Dremel. Oh, and eye protection, eye protection, eye protection. I had one of these cutting disks shatter as shown in the video.

PS: So that is how you use these white cottony disks.
